How long should I exercise is a question I get asked all the time. If I charged ten cents for every time someone asked me that question, I’d be a millionaire by now!

How long should I exercise is really a matter of external things rather than internal. Depending on how hard you exercise, you can get results from as little as ten minutes of exercise.

How Much Time Do I Have?

If you want to know how long should I exercise, ask yourself how much time can I commit to consistent exercise.  Please be realistic with yourself too. If in your busy schedule you can only carve out 15 minutes to exercise, then use that time. If you have more time, then, use it! The old saying: “Something is better than nothing” really works when it comes to exercise time.

What Are My Goals?

Your goals will help you figure out how much time you need to exercise. If you have a goal of running a marathon, you will need more time.  Running 26.2 miles takes a lot of time, so, you will need a lot of time each time you exercise.

If your goal is weight loss, general fitness or something like better flexibility, then, you don’t need a lot of time. You can achieve those goals with as little as 10-15 minutes of daily exercise (with good nutrition of course).

Work Smarter, Not Harder

In determining the answer to the question of how long should I exercise, you should be thinking of efficiency. So, how can I make exercise a part of just my daily activities.  If you do this, then your actual “exercise time”, does not have to be long.

For example, when you go grocery-shopping, park in a space that is far from the store entrance. Also, do the same thing at work.

While doing things household chores, throw in a couple of exercises too. Exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, cobras & planks work well with daily household chores.

Conclusion

How long should I exercise is really a matter of what your specific goals are. If you’re training for an event, you’ll need more time (60-120 minutes).  If you have general goals like weight loss, toning or better physique, you don’t need as much time as you think.
